I read a blog post this morning about Black Friday Tips for Teachers. I won't say that I was disgusted but it really got me thinking about what teachers really do.
Since August 20th, I've been a teacher. I haven't been much else. That's 3 months that I've been pretty focused on students, lesson planning, teacher evaluation, grading, building communities of learners, and so much more.
I haven't been much of a friend, dad, brother, son, or husband. I haven't been a homebrewer. I haven't been much of a blogger. There are plenty of things that I haven't been. I think it's been even more so this year starting at a new school.
So, let's talk about "The Holidays." This weekend, starting after this blog post, I'm going to be a dad (actually "papa" as my kids say). I'm going to be a husband. I'm going to be brother and son. I'm going to be alone. I'm going to be a homebrewer.
This is a chance for me to stop thinking (if it's possible) about school, students, and education. I'm going to watch the Macy's parade at my brother's house with his family, my family, and my dad. I'm going to try and get a bunch of "the guys" together for a drink. I'm going to try and squeeze a batch of homebrew. I'm going to go for a long long with Pandora.
Sunday night, all your school stuff will be there. It's not going to go away.
I ask each of you to stop thinking about school. I know that teachers can't do this easily. Take time to hug your significant other. Take time to snuggle your kids. Do stuff for you. Be with your family.
As important as your students are, take time for the other big stuff in your life.
