I recently starting working out again, now that summer school is over with and I have slightly more time to myself. This caused me to pull out my two iPods. I have an Orange Shuffle and a 2nd Generation. The Shuffle has appropriate school music on it that I used briefly in my classroom. The other iPod has my whole collection on it.
What I didn't realize is that I have my whole collection, my wife's whole collection and now a growing collection of Ian's music. There was a lot of not-so-good workout music. It was interesting to go from Beastie Boys to Dixie Chicks to Lori Berkner to Tom Petty.
Getting the iPod out caused me to think about my classroom and something that a respected teacher friend told me about early this summer. He worked with a music specialist who would have a song playing everyday when students entered. They would listen and write down what they liked, what they didn't like, and how they would describe it to someone else.
Great warm-up activity and discussion topic. Of course, I spent the remainder of my workout thinking about those three questions for every new song that I heard in that hour.
I think it is something that I will use in my classroom in the fall. Wether it is music, a picture, a quote or a short story. They could all be infused into a great warm-up activity. Of course, my document camera and projector will pull the technology into it all!
